Panic lit the womanâs eyes as she focused on Ginaâs flat stomach, then scanned the office. Horror seeped in. âThe baby. Whereâs my baby? Oh my God. Something happenedââ
âNo. Winnieââ Gina stepped toward her ââheâs fine. Heâs just fine.â
Everything happened so fast then. Winnie took a step toward Gina, desperation in her eyes, an animal sound in her throat. J.T. locked an arm around her, immobilizing her.
âNo! Donât! Let her go, J.T. Please. Let her go,â Gina implored. âLet go.â Softer then, but even more insistent.
âIâll cuff you to the damn chair, if I have to,â he said to Winnie, close to her ear.
He released her, but didnât move away.
Gina extended her hands toward her mother-in-law. âYou have a grandson, Winnie. And heâs beautiful.â
âWhere are you hiding him?â
Gina flinched at the icy accusation. After all these years, didnât this woman know her daughter-in-law at all? Hide her baby?
âHeâs with a friend,â Gina said, as if the strain of staying calm hurt. âA nurse. Theyâll be back soon, I promise.â
âHeâs ill?â
âHeâs perfectly healthy.â
âGet him.â
Gina shifted her gaze to J.T. He shook his head. He wasnât going anywhere.
âWhy donât you have a seat. Iâm sure they wonât be long,â Gina said.
Winnie glared at J.T., then perched on a chair. âWhen was Eric born?â
âJanuary second, just past noon. And his name is Joey. Joel Eric Banning.â
She almost levitated from the chair. âWe agreed! If it was a boy, he was supposed to be named Eric.â
âNo, Winnie. You announced it, deed done. I never agreed. He needs his own identity.â
âI wonât call him that. Joey.â Her mouth pinched tight.
âYes, you will.â
J.T. heard something new in Ginaâs voiceâauthority. She looked a little different, too. Composed. Serene.
âYouâll call him by his given name, because Iâm his mother, and thatâs my choice. Heâs his own person, not a replacement. I promise you heâll know everything there is to know about Eric.â
âWell, a promise from you isnât worth much, is it?â
Gina crouched in front of her. J.T. went on full alert, ready to intervene, earning himself a long, level, dagger of a look from the woman.
âI kept the ultimate promise,â Gina said. âIt wasnât easy on me. Iâve miscarried. Iâve had the equivalent of two more, when the inseminations didnât take. I went through a pregnancy alone.â
âYou had me.â
âI mean, without my husband, whom I loved and needed.â
Her declaration wrapped around J.T.âs throat and tightened. Heâd never heard her say the words before. The past would never fade for them, he realized. They would always be tied by it, by what they had in commonâEric. By her love for himâand J.T.âs hatred. By the child that was a living link, who couldnât be ignored.
Gina set a hand on Winnieâs. âI know you did the best you could. But your best was too much.â
âI have rights.â
J.T. snapped to attention. âLegally you have no rights,â he said, glad the law backed him up. He could see why Gina had left. His blood pressure wouldâve skyrocketed, too.
âI do have rights. And I know who you are, J.
